The city-center castle is a three-in-one historic site. It began life as a Roman fort 2,000 years ago, served as a Norman castle in medieval times, and in the 19th century was completely remodeled as a lavish Victorian mansion by the hugely wealthy Marquess of Bute, who made his fortune in Cardiff's booming docklands.
